North American Carbide was founded in 1979 by Richard Liebich. Mr. Liebich was born in Albany NY and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and his master’s degree in business administration from Michigan State University. Mr. Liebich besides founding the cutting tool manufacturing company, North American Carbide, founded a ceramics company, Cerbide. He also worked with Shenendehowa High School and Hudson Valley Community College to launch Project Lead the Way, a program that currently works to get students K-12 nationwide involved in the field of engineering through a hands-on, project-based learning curriculum. He also had a dedication to improving end-of-life care through the companies Care Support of America and the nonprofit Center for Advanced Illness Coordinated Care.

Richard Liebich, being so involved with many endeavors looked to hire a Plant Manager for his cutting tool manufacturing company, North American Carbide. In 1981 he hired Robert E. Gralke as his Plant Manager. Mr. Gralke soon found that he had the equipment but did not have enough sales coming in the door. He ended up working during the day to hunt for sales opportunities then returned at night to operate the machines grinding inserts. Bob Gralke also hired his wife Marsha Gralke in 1981 to help him inspect the quality of the inserts before sending them to the customers. As business began to take off Bob became the Sales Manager for the company. The company showed steady growth through the years and Richard Liebich offered Bob 48% of the company shares which he purchased.

Sadly after battling a brief illness Richard Liebich passed away in 2012. Bob Gralke purchased the remaining shares of the company from the estate of the now late Richard Liebich and became the sole owner of the company. Today North American Carbide is a private, family owned company with no one to please but our customers and employees. Bob Gralke is the President of the company and his wife Marsha Gralke the Operatons Manager, their sons also work for North American Carbide. Our business is built on saving customers money and taking care of our employees. At North American Carbide we pride ourselves on keeping up with technological advancements as well as best practices in advanced manufacturing.
